The tortoise was found in the yard of a Sangoma, a traditional healer, who had painted Blue, likely as a means of identification.</p>

<p>Carina Crayton, co-founder of the Wild Heart Wildlife Foundation, explained the dangers of painting a tortoise’s shell. &#8220;A tortoise&#8217;s shell is more than just armor; it&#8217;s part of their skeletal system, with their ribs and spine fused to it,&#8221; Carina said. &#8220;The shell is porous, which allows tortoises to absorb moisture—essential for their survival, especially in arid regions. <p>Thanks to the quick actions of Loraine Botha and Martin van der Breggen, who rescued Blue and transported him to the foundation&#8217;s rehabilitation facility, the tortoise now has a chance for a full recovery. Upon arrival, the team began stabilizing Blue and initiated the painstaking process of removing the harmful paint.</p>

<p>The study suggests that if fallen trees served as rafts, they may have provided food for the iguanas during their long journey across the Pacific. These natural rafts would have been crucial for the survival of the reptiles over such a vast distance.</p>

<p>Auckland Council&#8217;s Environmental Services team has embarked on a vital conservation initiative to protect the Hochstetter’s frog, or pepeketua, a species classified as “At-Risk – Declining” by the Department of Conservation. This project, supported by Ngāti Manuhiri kaitiaki, will see local conservation experts collaborate with contractors to monitor and protect the frog’s remaining habitats.</p>
<p>Frogs are often regarded as environmental “barometers,” sensitive to changes in their surroundings. As Auckland grapples with climate change and urban development, understanding the status of this ancient amphibian could offer insights into the broader health of local ecosystems.</p>
<p>Senior Ecologist Alicia Wong is leading the charge on this important research. She explains that despite its impressive ability to live for more than 30 years—longer than many household pets—the Hochstetter’s frog is facing a decline in numbers.</p>
<p>“Although this species has fared better than its relatives, like Archey’s and Hamilton’s frogs, its population is still in decline,” Wong said. “This survey is crucial for understanding their population, distribution, and habitat needs, ensuring that conservation efforts are focused on the best areas.”</p>
<p>The first phase of the survey, completed last summer, focused on identifying areas with the highest potential for suitable frog habitats. The current phase, which began this week, will provide a more detailed survey of the frog populations to guide future conservation actions.</p>
<p>Frogs have existed for more than 360 million years, outdating even the dinosaurs, yet they are among the most threatened animals today. Hochstetter’s frog (Leiopelma hochstetteri) is one of the most evolutionarily distinct amphibians, with a lineage spanning over 70 million years. Found only in specific parts of the North Island, including the Auckland region, its conservation is now more urgent than ever.</p>
<p>Globally, nearly 41% of amphibian species face extinction, a rate higher than that of mammals, birds, or reptiles. Habitat destruction, climate change, and disease are major threats to frog populations worldwide.</p>
<p>New Zealand is home to 14 native frog species, including Archey’s frog, Hamilton’s frog, Hochstetter’s frog, and the unique Aotea/Great Barrier Island swimming frog. Hochstetter’s frog is now considered to be made up of at least 10 genetically distinct populations, although they have yet to be formally described. Auckland hosts four of these populations, including those from the Hūnua Ranges, Great Barrier Island, Waitākere Ranges, and Rodney.</p>
<p>Unlike their vocal relatives, Hochstetter’s frogs are voiceless and earless, preferring to stay silent. These unique amphibians are also the only species in New Zealand that thrive in aquatic habitats, inhabiting damp forests, streams, and mossy rocks.</p>
<p>In an effort to better understand the frog&#8217;s distribution and population in Auckland, the Environmental Services team has launched a two-year survey across multiple sites, including Department of Conservation land and private properties.</p>
<p>On Aotea/Great Barrier Island, Auckland Council is working with local herpetologists, the Windy Hill-Rosalie Bay Catchment Trust, and Ngāti Rehua to monitor the island’s Hochstetter’s frog population. Dr. Sabine Melzer, Senior Regional Advisor for Fauna, emphasizes the importance of the long-term monitoring program, which has been ongoing since 2012.</p>
<p>“This monitoring program provides vital data on population trends, helping us shape future conservation strategies for the Hochstetter’s frog,” Dr. Melzer said. “These frogs are nocturnal and rely on cool, moist environments such as streams, waterfalls, and rocky crevices for survival, but face serious threats from habitat loss, predation by invasive species, and climate change.”</p>
<p>The project underscores Auckland Council&#8217;s commitment to preserving the region’s unique biodiversity and supporting the survival of the Hochstetter’s frog. The initiative is a crucial step in conserving New Zealand’s rare wildlife, offering hope for this ancient species’ future.</p>
<p>Auckland Council is also encouraging residents to get involved in frog conservation by protecting local waterways, reducing sediment runoff, participating in predator control programs, and supporting habitat restoration efforts.</p>
<p>While it may not be possible to turn a frog into a prince, as Kermit the Frog famously said, &#8220;It’s not easy being green,&#8221; a little effort can go a long way in ensuring the survival of the Hochstetter’s frog for generations to come</p>

This new analysis, led by Lund University paleontologist Miguel Marx and his team, utilizes advanced microscopy and spectroscopy to uncover unprecedented details about the appearance and adaptation of these marine reptiles.</p>
<p>The fossil, which belonged to a plesiosaur estimated to be around 4.5 meters in length, was originally excavated in 1940 from Holzmaden, Germany. Following its discovery, the specimen was buried for protection during World War II before being stored for decades in a museum.</p>
<p>The team confirmed that the fossil dates back approximately 183 million years, to a time when plesiosaurs were especially abundant in Earth&#8217;s oceans. These creatures are known to have given birth to live young and breathed air, traits that suggest they may have been warm-blooded. Interestingly, while the skin on the fossil’s tail remained smooth, resembling that of today&#8217;s warm-blooded marine animals, a sample from the right foreflipper revealed small, irregular triangular scales.</p>
<p>By comparing these fossilized scales to those of modern animals, the researchers found that they closely resemble the carapace scutes of sea turtles and the scales of mosasauroid marine lizards. The thickness of the plesiosaur&#8217;s skin was also found to be similar to that of living sea turtles, suggesting an evolutionary adaptation to their aquatic environment.</p>
<p>Marx and his team propose that these scale-like structures may have served a dual purpose. The scales could have enhanced swimming performance by reducing drag, or they may have provided traction while the plesiosaur moved along the seafloor during benthic grazing. The latter theory is supported by evidence of plesiosaurs &#8220;bottom-walking&#8221; and feeding on sediment-dwelling snails and crustaceans, with preserved stomach contents further corroborating this behavior.</p>
<p>Additionally, the researchers discovered pigment cells near the surface of the tail skin but not on the tougher flipper skin, which may have been adapted for protection. These pigment cells contain corneous beta-proteins, which are responsible for the hardness and immobility of modern reptile scales.</p>
<p>The findings suggest that, unlike other marine reptiles of the time—such as the more fish-like ichthyosaurs, which lost their scales to reduce drag—plesiosaurs retained their reptilian scales after transitioning from land to sea. The researchers conclude that these flipper scales likely provided a selective advantage, contributing to the plesiosaur&#8217;s long-term success as one of the most dominant marine predators of the Mesozoic era.</p>

Wu shared footage of the incident on the Singapore Wildlife Sightings Facebook page, noting that he was unsure how the snake had caught the bird. He also mentioned that the mynah still appeared to be alive, with &#8220;a little bit of breath&#8221; left, as the snake began its attempt to swallow it.</p>
<p>The footage shows the snake using its fangs to secure the bird while twisting its body around the bird’s form. The snake then dragged the bird from the center of the boardwalk toward the railings.</p>
<p>The incident sparked a debate among onlookers about whether human intervention was necessary. Some suggested that Wu could have stepped in to save the bird, while others emphasized the importance of allowing nature to take its course and minimizing human interference.</p>
<p>Experts confirmed the snake&#8217;s identity as a Red-tailed Racer, a non-venomous species known for preying on birds, bird eggs, and even bats. These snakes are notorious for raiding nests.</p>
<p>In response to the incident, the National Parks Board (NParks) issued a reminder to the public on handling wildlife encounters. They advised staying calm when encountering a snake, as most snakes are shy and will retreat if left undisturbed. The NParks also cautioned against attempting to handle snakes without proper training.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A pixie frog named Juan has been given a new lease on life after an unusual procedure at a British Columbia veterinary clinic. The amphibian underwent surgery last weekend to remove a large coin lodged in its abdomen.</p>
<p>Juan was rushed from Squamish to the Dewdney Animal Hospital in Maple Ridge, one of the few facilities in the province equipped to treat exotic animals. The issue? Juan had swallowed a 50-pence coin.</p>
<p>Dr. Adrian Walton, the hospital’s owner and lead veterinarian, explained the odd behavior with humor and science.<br />
“Juan is a prime example of too few brain cells in too big a body,” Walton told CTV News. “I’m not trying to insult frogs, but they’re really, really stupid. Anything that moves in front of them, they’ll try to eat.”</p>
<p>The coin, which occupied around 20% of Juan’s abdomen, posed a serious health risk. The clinic’s standard otoscope was too short to retrieve the object, prompting Walton to call in a specialist: Dr. Eugene Gorodetsky, an endoscopist known for removing swallowed items from pets across the province. Gorodetsky also stars in the new reality series My Pet Ate What!?, premiering on CTV Wild this weekend.</p>
<p><strong>Complex Anesthesia Procedure</strong></p>
<p>Anesthetizing Juan proved to be a unique challenge. With thousands of frog species and limited guidelines for sedation, the veterinary team had to make educated guesses.<br />
They began with an injectable anesthetic, which only partially sedated the frog. Next, they applied a fish anesthetic to Juan’s skin, and finally injected the same drug directly into his abdomen.</p>
<p>“After a few minutes, Juan was sufficiently asleep for us to insert a camera down his throat and grab the coin,” Walton said.</p>
<p>The entire process took 45 minutes to achieve sedation but only three minutes to extract the coin.</p>
<p><strong>Not Juan’s First Mistake</strong></p>
<p>Juan is not the first frog Walton has treated for swallowing unusual objects. Previous patients have ingested socks and toys.</p>
<p>“I can’t stress this enough: frogs are not smart. Big body, tiny brain,” Walton remarked.</p>
<p>Juan’s owner reports that the frog is recovering well, despite his questionable dietary decisions.</p>
